 ANNOTATION

This article dwells on polemic between the prominent thinker of the East, publicist, journalist and politician of the 19th century S.D. Afghani and E. Renan on the pages of the French journal "Journal de Debates". S.D. Afghani is the founder of a number of publications not only in Muslim countries, but also in Western Europe. Ernest Renan, a prominent French public figure, philosopher and historian of religion, was a representative of Eurocentrism. In his articles, especially in the article "On Islam and Science," which was published in the Journal de Debates on March 29, 1883 in Paris, E. Renan expressed judgments containing a negative assessment of Islam, calling it an instrument of despotism and terror, and also, not observing ethics, speaks rather offensively about the Arab nation. This article provoked the anger and outrage of Arabs and other Muslims. S.D. Afghani, who was in Paris, after reading this article, wrote a serious scientific and journalistic article "Reply to Renan", which was published in the same magazine on May 18, 1883. This article is written in epistolary style. In his article, S.D. Afghani not only criticizes his opponent, but also opposes his views on this or that problem, giving examples, arguments and quotes based on facts, scientifically and tactfully proves the correctness of his thought. This once again proves the power of the journalism of the thinker, because every line of propaganda be him attracted the attention of the masses. There is also a conversation with S.D. Afghani and E. Renan, who was impressed by the sheikh's firm, free character, after which the latter sharply changes his views on this issue.
