 ANNOTATION

In this article, the author, based on the works of Arab-Muslim historians - Tabari, al-Masudi and Ibn al-Athir, as well as the results of research by orientalists H. Kennedy and I.M. Filshtinsky analyzed the procedure for legitimizing the rights of the sons of the Baghdad caliph Harun ar-Rashid (786-809) – Muhammad Amin and Abdullah Mamun to the throne. It is emphasized that the early Abbasid caliphs appointed two successors. Their right to the throne was considered legitimate after they were sworn in by members of the Abbasid dynasty, nobles and military leaders. The author considers the influence of the origin of Amin and Ma'mun along the Matherian line on the decision of Harun ar-Rashid. It is stated that Horun ar-Rashid became the first caliph who appointed three successors and accepted written obligations from the first two, a kind of contract for power, and sealed their oaths in the presence of the entire religious and political elite of the Caliphate in the suspended city of Mecca. The reasons for such an attitude of Harun al-Rashid in the case of regulated rights of succession to the throne are considered.
