ANNOTATION

The article under consideration is written based on field ethnographic materials collected by the author in 1983-1986, archival materials and an analysis in regard to scientific literature on the foothill regions of Northern Tajikistan and is divided into investigated and control (comparative) areas regarding the economic activities of the population as well. The adduced archival materials, collected by the author in the Central State Archives of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are introduced into scientific circulation, for the first time. The author adduces a comparison between two source materials - archival and field, which testify to the presence of agricultural and cattle-breeding farms. Into the bargain, an important place is given to the issues concerned with taxes and taxation of the population of both cattle-breeding and agricultural areas. Adducing the example out of the availability of harvested crop and livestock, the tax rate and the system of exploitation of residents are indicted in the article by the author.
